India had 1.108B broadband connections at the end of September 2026, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) subscription data. India’s total telephone connections increased by 7.23 million in September, reaching 1,367.93 million, a 0.53% monthly rise. Overall tele-density rose from 95.07% to 95.52%, or 85.41% excluding M2M connections.
Total broadband
Broadband connections rose from 1.101B in August to 1.108B in September, an increase of 6.47M, or 0.59%, based on TRAI’s figures. The exact totals are 1,101.21 million in August and 1,107.68 million in September, drawn from reports by 1,596 operators. TRAI’s counts include Airtel’s machine-to-machine (M2M) SIMs from December 2025, so growth across that month partly reflects a reclassification rather than new connections.
Broadband providers
Jio had 541.17M broadband connections in September, followed by Airtel with 388.86M, Vodafone Idea with 131M, BSNL with 28.55M and Atria Convergence Technologies with 2.50M, according to TRAI’s provider table. These five together hold 98.59% of the market. By my calculation from the table, Jio has roughly 49%, Airtel roughly 35% and Vodafone Idea roughly 12%.

Jio and Airtel’s combined connections made up 83.96% of TRAI’s India broadband total in September, compared with 83.95% in August. The December 2025 Airtel provider figure was carried forward from November because Airtel did not submit data for that month; the December point in the share series should be read with that limitation.

Broadband segments
Mobile broadband accounted for 1.039B connections in September, while fixed wired broadband had 48.89M and fixed wireless broadband 19.70M, according to TRAI’s segment breakdown. Monthly growth was 0.57% for mobile (from 1,033.24 million), 0.54% for wired (from 48.63 million) and 1.84% for fixed wireless, the fastest of the three. Fixed wireless broadband rose from 19.34M in August. TRAI began counting 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in the fixed wireless segment in November 2024, so figures before that month are not directly comparable.
Fixed wireless
Within FWA, 5G FWA subscriptions rose from 13.45M in August to 13.61M in September, TRAI reported. That is a net addition of about 152,000, or 1.13% growth. Jio accounts for 9.52 million and Airtel for 4.09 million. TRAI listed 7.06M rural and 6.54M urban 5G FWA subscriptions. Unlicensed-band radio (UBR) FWA subscriptions rose from 5.37M to 5.58M. Rural areas hold 51.89% of the total and urban areas 48.11%. Unlicensed-band radio (UBR) FWA subscriptions rose from 5.37M to 5.58M.
