In the broader markets, the Nifty 100 rose more than 1.08 per cent as volatility declined. Sectorally, the Nifty Auto index fell 0.24 per cent and the Nifty Realty index jumped 2.75 per cent.

Indian benchmark indices traded higher on Thursday, October 29, with the Sensex and Nifty 50 gaining ground on the back of buying in FMCG and PSU banking stocks. The broader market also remained in positive territory, while the Nifty Auto index bucked the trend.

As of 12:10 PM, the BSE Sensex had climbed 608 points, or 0.83%, to 73,854. The NSE Nifty 50 advanced 163 points, or 0.72%, to 22,862.

FMCG, PSU Banks Lead Sectoral Gains

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty FMCG index emerged as the top performer, rising 1.6%. The Nifty PSU Bank index followed with a gain of 1.3%.

However, the Nifty Auto index traded lower, declining 0.40%.

The broader market also witnessed buying interest, with both the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices gaining more than 0.40% each.

Sensex, Nifty Open Higher After Muted Start

Domestic benchmark indices began Thursday's session on a muted note before moving into positive territory.

The BSE Sensex opened at 73,268.47 and subsequently touched an intraday high of 73,373.84, marking a gain of 0.17%. The Nifty 50 also advanced to an intraday high of 22,725.2, rising 0.15%.

At 9:19 AM, the Sensex was up 92 points, or 0.13%, at 73,337. The Nifty 50 gained 25 points, or 0.11%, at the opening to trade at 22,723, moving above the 22,700 mark.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT and Nifty Media indices led the early gains, rising more than 0.9% each at 9:27 AM. The Nifty Auto index, meanwhile, declined 0.44%.

Among Sensex constituents, Adani Ports surged more than 2% at 9:25 AM, emerging as the top gainer. TCS, Airtel, Power Grid and HCL Tech also featured among the leading gainers.

GIFT Nifty Signals Positive Start

Earlier in the morning, GIFT Nifty pointed to a positive opening for domestic equities. At 7:01 AM IST, the index was trading at 22,792, up 93.15 points, or 0.41%, from the previous Nifty 50 close of 22,698.85.

The positive indication came after domestic equities ended marginally lower in the previous session. Gains on Wall Street and broadly firm Asian markets provided support to the early market outlook.

However, crude oil prices remained above USD 100 per barrel, keeping energy costs and their potential impact on India's import bill in focus.

Wall Street Ends Higher, Asian Markets Trade Firm

US equity markets closed modestly higher in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.19% to 52,475.10, while the S&P 500 gained 0.28% to settle at 7,743.98. The Nasdaq advanced 0.27% to 26,549.85.

Asian markets also traded largely in positive territory during early trade. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.10%, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.91%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.23%.

European markets ended the previous session on a mixed-to-positive note. Germany's DAX rose 0.44%, and the FTSE 100 added 0.07%, while France's CAC 40 remained largely unchanged.

Crude Oil Remains Above USD 100 Per Barrel

Crude oil prices edged lower in early trade but remained elevated.

Brent crude was trading at USD 114.40 per barrel as of 7:02 AM IST, down 0.86%. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 0.98% to USD 101.83 per barrel.

The marginal decline could offer some relief, but prices above USD 100 per barrel remain a key consideration for India, a major oil importer. Oil marketing companies, aviation firms and other fuel-intensive businesses are likely to remain in focus as investors assess the impact of elevated energy costs.

Gold, Silver, Rupee And US Bond Yields

In the commodities market, gold slipped 0.14% to USD 4,061.58, while silver edged up 0.13% to USD 54.05.

The Dollar Index was marginally lower at 102.16, down 0.04%. The Indian rupee was trading around Rs 95.21 per US dollar, unchanged from its previous level.

Meanwhile, the US 10-year Treasury yield declined by 0.018 percentage points to 5.003%. Movements in US bond yields remain important for global risk appetite and equity valuations as investors assess their implications for financial conditions.

FII, DII Buying Provides Support

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers of Indian equities worth Rs 871.83 crore on October 28. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also remained net buyers, purchasing equities worth Rs 643.35 crore.

Buying by both foreign and domestic institutional investors provided a supportive backdrop for the market. However, a single session of net inflows does not necessarily indicate a sustained trend.

Previous Day Performance

Indian equities closed lower on October 28, with both benchmark indices registering losses.

The Nifty 50 settled at 22,698.85, down 50.90 points, or 0.22%. During the session, it moved between an intraday low of 22,497.70 and a high of 22,778.05.

The BSE Sensex fell 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to close at 73,246.03. The index touched an intraday high of 73,525.44 and a low of 72,603.57.

Meanwhile, the India VIX declined 0.98% to 16.24, indicating relatively contained volatility expectations compared with the preceding session.
